A good pre-deployment step is re evaluating your household budget. Not only to look at the extra income from deployments such as family separation pay (around $250.00) but to evaluate the added costs associated with deployment.

Associated costs with deployment could be higher postage expenses for care packages, the cost for weekly phone calling cards, and extra spending money for the service member during in port periods.

The military provides all branches of service with financial counseling services. This would be a great tool in preparing your pre-deployment budget. Always make sure to have a decent savings ready in the event of the unforeseen any co-pays that may pop up for health, dental or the car problems that happen more often than we would like.
